History

Matias de Oliveira Pinto ask Efrain to write a piece for the Bolivar Soloists (fl, 2vln, vla, vc, bass) featuring him as a soloists on the cello. This first version was premiered in Dortmund, Germany, in late 2016. Matias commissioned Efrain two further versions of the piece, one for string orchestra and one for cello ensemble. The version for string orchestra was premiered in 2017 by Matias and the Kammerensemble Konsonanz in Bremen, Germany. The version for cello ensemble was premiered in Brazil later that year.

Efrain Oscher's compositions often tell stories: historical tales, fictional narratives, or real-life accounts from his own experiences or those of his friends. 'Campeão' tells the story of cellist Matias de Oliveira Pinto and his beautiful friendship with his horse.

In an idyllic house outside São Paulo lived a boy named Matias. When he was 7 years old, he received a horse as a gift. He named it 'Campeão,' and it was his companion for many years. Together, the two enjoyed freedom, won races, explored the surroundings, and made many new friends. Matias came to Europe to study cello. Every time Matias visited his family, 'Campeão' rejoiced, but the horse missed him greatly. Years later, the old horse 'Campeão' passed away, and the successful cellist felt a deep pain in his heart.

Upon hearing the "pavane" at the beginning of the work, we can imagine Matias in a room, his eyes full of tears, looking out the window into the distance. Subsequently, memories of the adventures he shared with his equine companion come to mind. The recollections of them galloping through the meadow, racing, or resting under a tree were set to music with Brazilian rhythms. Throughout the piece, scenes of these memories alternate with Matias in his room after receiving news of 'Campeão's death.
